Penny is my co-own girl from Abigail's second litter. This was her first litter. She has her CGC and a couple trick titles, has been herding a handful of times and showed a lot of very nice instinct and she's attended several agility classes, which she shows a ton of promise for, but her handler is not ready for any competitions. What Penny has really been tried and tested in is being a very stable and sound dog, who has done a ton of traveling, lots of patio and coffee shops dining, attended countless parties and social gatherings, all of which she handles beautifully. Penny has high drive and low arousal.
The sire of the litter is Nitro, owned at the time by Butterfield Farms. At the time, he had one litter which was very young. He is the son of her dog Fable, who has produced many litters and generally passes on his friendly and good natured temperament. When Nitro arrived at my house for breeding, he was very sweet to humans and social and friendly with all of the dogs while not being pushy. One of the things I learned about Nitro during his time here was that he could be very soft and sensitive, although he never fully warmed up to being at our house so we may have just not seen his best side. The sensitivity and softness that Border Collies can sometimes possess is something I generally try to breed away from. Luckily Penny is very confident and forward and the pups have been well balanced and nice. While Nitro wasn’t a bad dog, this sensitivity is not the temperament I want to perpetuate in my program. It’s impossible to say if his soft side was genetically predisposed or how he was raised. Penny is very strong in the areas where he is weaker and Nitro has gorgeous structure which complemented Penny's very well, as well as a nice smaller stature.
The intention of this litter was to create nicely tempered active pets with moderate drive for people who just want a lovely companion and entry level sport dog, rather than serious working and competitive sport homes.
At just over one year old (early 2023), the puppies are maturing very nicely with Nitro’s lovely structure and the well balanced temperament their grandsire Fable was known to produce, Penny’s friendliness, enthusiasm and drive. They are well loved by their owners and are making great even keeled pets and low level sport dogs. I’ve gotten to know several of them very well via training and I am happy with how they are turning out! See our Updates page for any new developments on the litter.
