"Subaru"
|
Subaru has been washed from being a breeding prospect and has been placed with my best friend and is now living in beautiful San Diego. While it was never my intention not to keep her, as a breeder you simply cannot keep them all and sometimes the reality is that someone else may be able to offer a dog a better situation for that individual. Subaru is a challenging dog to own in a multi-dog household and she has struggled with behavioral issues since she was about 4-5 months old. Destructive, reactive, obsessively chewing the fur off of her own body. While we worked through her reactivity and destructive tendencies, she never stopped chewing her fur in my home. I tried to eliminate different foods and proteins to see if it was an allergy, I tried to change her routine and schedule, I tried all I was willing to humanely attempt behaviorally. Since she has been with my friend, the fur is growing back over most of her body. She still nibbles it off her tail and feet but that is something she very well may do forever. It's a part of who she is. Due to this and a few other reasons, I decided a long time ago not to breed her. Then when my friend fell in love with Subaru, we decided to give it a try and we are all so happy with how it is working out. Subaru is getting to do far more sports than she was here, she started tasking for my friend's anxiety, and she is just fitting in perfectly with them. So while it is very sad and heart breaking to let her go, I do still get to see her very regularly and even "borrow" her to come visit and help nanny the litters of pups - something she deeply enjoys and is very good at!
Subaru is a half show half working line Border Collie from Butterfield Farms. She is super high drive and a very intense dog! She has great work ethic and she sticks to things she knows with a lot of reliability. She is very sweet and tender with puppies but can be a little pushy with dogs her own size and she likes to play rough. She has very high toy drive for toys of all kinds. She is a great disc dog. She has a really firm bite and she will tug her heart out, no matter what you do. She loves the competition and the "fight" in games of tug and you can pick her up, push her around, grab her feet, swing her off the ground and she will not release until cued to Out, at which time she immediately drops the toy. She would rather work for toys than food but she does have nice food drive as well. When she was about 6 months old, we took the dogs to a river nearby which has pretty steep banks and Abigail and Calypso were jumping in to retrieve sticks. Subaru watched them closely, running back and forth on the shore, and finally decided to leap off the bank like a dock dog! She was un-phased and still really enjoys swimming. |
