Kind Words from Our Extended Family

Picture
I found Madeline here on Good Dog well over 4 years ago. There was a lot I wanted in a breeder (ENS, Puppy Culture raising or something similar, Temperament Testing, above and beyond Health testing, etc.) and when I stumbled upon Old Hemp Border Collies I couldn’t believe I found a breeder who crossed off everything on my checklist, but even went above and beyond that. Fast forward to now, I have two dogs from Madeline. Rumor, formally Equinox, and Tempo, formally Fleece.

I travel and perform at stunt dog shows with these two all across the country. They have been in the wildest of circumstances (a loose cow running through the fairgrounds, for example) and never bat an eye. They are so friendly, and truly good with all ages. Tempo even qualified for the Crufts International Freestyle Competition at just 2 years old. Madeline flew all the way to England just to support Tempo and I. Madeline has become one of my very good friends, and I’m so beyond grateful that her breeding program brought us together.

Madeline has even let me borrow two of her dogs before for the stunt dog shows that I do! I have personally gotten to spend time with Lucid the Whippet and Sprite the Papillon. Both are amazing examples of their breed. Lucid is an absolute beast at any sport she does, and loved performing for a good crowd. Sprite reminds me a lot of my boy Tempo. Sprite is eager to train or play, and picks up on things quite easy. He is not phased by anything! Getting my dogs from Madeline truly changed my life. I really can’t see myself ever getting a dog that isn’t from her program. If you have the honor of getting to own a puppy from Madeline, it will change your life for the better. You will never regret getting a dog from her.

Madeline and Daniel with Old Hemp Border Collies are amazing! I knew right away from our initial conversations that they truly love what they do. They are not just passionate about breeding excellent dogs, but they are passionate about pairing their dogs with the best owner/match possible. I talked with them several times, including a thorough call so they could learn about me, before I moved forward with getting a border collie from them. They knew exactly what I was looking for but also knew exactly what dog would be the best fit for me. It was clearly not about profit for them or "first come first serve", but rather about matching excellent dogs to the right owner. They spend a ton of time on their puppies during crucial developmental periods to ensure the best outcome for the dogs longterm. I got the most perfect border collie imaginable from them! Luca is a perfect fit and we share an unbreakable bond. The transition from the breeder to my home went incredibly smooth and I took advantage of several training sessions with Madeline and Daniel that helped my puppy grow into a well mannered, well trained, perfect dog for me. I could not be happier with my decision to go with Old Hemp Border Collies.

I will never be able to thank Madeline enough for trusting with me with my first ever Whippet! Lurk (formerly Larimar) is the sweetest, most stable, and easy dog I’ve ever owned or trained. He’s an easy going guy who settled into my multi-dog household effortlessly. He was everything I was wanting and I’m forever grateful to call him mine. Madeline definitely knows her dogs and is very selective with breedings and puppy matching. Lurk has all the traits and attributes she said he would. Her ability to get to know each puppy results in them finding perfect owners. In my opinion Madeline is a great representation of an ethical breeder and plan to get more OH dogs in the future!

I was dreaming of a Border Collie for years and stumbled upon Old Hemp Border Collies just as the Space litter was born. Instantly I was drawn to Solstice and watched her grow, waiting excitedly for updates. With a magic twist of fate, I was chosen to be Solstice's (now Gaia) new person! Madeline was awesome to work with, always patient and kind with all my "new mom" worries. She and Daniel did zoom meetings to help with training and helped ease us into puppy life. Madeline was always a text away and quick to respond. A couple years went by and I was ready for another BC. Madeline kept me in the loop from breeding to birth and up to selection of my next sweet boy Merino (now Flynn) from the Fabrics litter. Madeline and Daniel are the type of people you feel instantly friends with and like you can rely on them when dog problems arise to help trouble shoot and solve them so the dog you get from Old Hemp will be the best they can be.

A little over 3 years ago I got my first puppy from Madeline, and it was easily one of the best decisions I have made. After I decided that I wanted a border collie, I started to look for ethical breeders online who health tested, used puppy culture, and had knowledge on the breed. Madeline was recommended to me by an online friend and after looking into her program, and seeing she was also a trainer, I knew I had to rech out. I ended up speaking with Madeline for almost a year before I put in my application for my first puppy.

Madeline was, and always has been completely honest and open with me. She answers any and every question with transparent honesty and no judgment. She is very easy to approach and she is very knowledgeable about the breed. After putting in my application and going over what I was looking for in a dog, Madeline reached out and said she had picked out Mac and thought that he would be a great match for us. We made arrangements and drove down to meet Mac and Madeline for the first time and it was an unforgettable experience. Madeline welcomed us into her home, and introduced us to Mac and let us spend some time with Mac's dam as well as other dogs in her program. We brought Mac home and Madeline kept in close touch with us. She made it very clear that I could reach out anytime and she has to this day always been supportive.

Mac is everything I asked for and more. He has grown into an amazing, stable, athletic border collie. He excels at disc and he earned his championship disc dog title after placing 3rd out of over 400 teams during his first season in the k9 disc league.

Mac was such an amazing dog that we decided to get our next two from Madeline as well and they have also been absolutely amazing. I am beyond grateful that I have Madeline as a breeder and that I have the lovely dogs, that she carefully and lovingly produced, in my home. Madeline works hard and puts so much love and care into her program, and it shows in the dogs she produces. She doesn't just love them while they are there, she loves them for life.

I am absolutely thrilled with my three OH dogs, Mac, Wick, and Feyre, and I love being a part of the OH family. Reach out to Madeline for your next dog! I promise you wouldn't regret it!

I can't say enough great things about Madeline and her dogs! Her process is through and she is serious about her criteria. It is clear she has the best interest of her dogs and puppies at heart. I loved seeing her videos of the litter I had applied for, I knew that they were getting an enriched start on life. I continue to see the benefits of her early development program in the wonderful dog I have today. Through her videos and communication, I was confident of her transparency throughout the process. She has remained supportive and available, months after the "final sale". I got the dog of my dreams, but more importantly, my dog, Rhys, got a great start. He is a smart, even-tempered, happy, healthy, and confident dog. I couldn't' be happier!

In our quest to expand our whippet family, my husband had one request: the breeder should be conveniently located near our home. After extensive research and careful consideration, we found the ideal breeder, Old Hemp Border Collies/ Open Horizon Sport Dogs, only five states away! Madeline’s breeding program extends so far beyond puppy sales; she prioritizes total well being, exposure and stimulation to different environments and socialization insuring a balanced, highly functional and healthy companion for life. We could not have asked for more and given the chance would not hesitate to travel that distance again!

I have two Border Collies from Old Hemp BCs/Open Horzon Sportdogs. The first is 6 years old and my right-hand dog on the farm. The 2nd is related to my first and is 9 months old. He is coming along in his farm training. Both dogs are fantastic animals, which I credit to careful breeding and the extensive pre conditioning work that Madeline does during their first 8 weeks. I highly recommend Old Hemp BCs/Open Horizon Sportdogs.

Madeline and I became friends via Instagram when I found her profile while searching for resources on the Border Collie breed over two years ago. The first litter I followed was the Fabrics. Madeline’s care and raising of all her pups is so amazing, and that’s an understatement. She raises them to thrive and is so passionate about laying strong foundations for healthy, balanced pups to last throughout their lives. She’s incredibly knowledgeable of not only the breed itself but canine behaviors. I appreciate that she does temperament testing and places the pups in homes that she knows will best suit them and their new person, not simply first come first served. I also very much appreciate the ethical breeding, doing all the necessary health screenings before proceeding with a litter. She answers any questions you may have, is totally transparent about her program and posting daily updates on the active litters, has many helpful resources, and is also just a genuinely cool person. I applied to Madeline’s program a year and a half ago because I was convinced I wanted a pup from her for all reasons mentioned above and more. I was lucky enough to get matched to one of the Oranges. Working with Madeline was a breeze and I’m so grateful to have finally met her and become part of the Old Hemp family.

I love my girl from Old Hemp BCs! I have one of the RPG litter pups. Madeline’s program is very thorough and she sets her pups up for success in life through her rigorous health testing and puppy raising. I loved seeing all the footage she shared of the litter as they grew. I was looking for a sport dog prospect and I’m more than happy with how my pup turned out! She’s more on the medium drive side, low arousal, and handler focused. But also has an excellent off switch and can take it easy for days at a time. We’re fortunate to have great access to a variety of dog sports and she’s been happy to participate in just about everything we’ve tried. She’s a wonderful sport dog that’s also easy to live with and I couldn’t be happier with her.

We met Madeline through a mutual connection to border collies we already owned. As we started following her and watching her thoroughness with education and all her transparency with every breeding pair we decided to reach out and see about getting a new family member. She made the experience very comfortable and she is a great person. Three years later I continue to follow her and any time you have questions or concerns she’s always there to answer them. Just because you have had your pup a while doesn’t mean you lose touch with her. I have recommended her to others looking for a dog and have shared helpful information she’s given me as well. In a heartbeat I’d get another dog from her!

I don't have an Open Horizon/Old Hemp pup - yet - but I've still got stuff to say! I started following Old Hemp BC's 4 years ago on social media. I started working with Madeline and Daniel 2-3 years ago for help with some training plateaus and to better understand my current BC. After working with and meeting the Oliver family (both human and pups alike), and having met many of Madeline's bred-bys (grown and living their best lives with their human families) from previous litters, I am dead set that my next dog will be an Open Horizon/Old Hemp dog. The care/love, transparency, knowledge, and research Madeline puts into every litter and every individual puppy/dog is unlike anything I have witnessed or worked with previously. I know what it's like to raise and train high drive, high energy, and high arousal working bred dogs with little to no breeder support--it is daunting and, in some instances, soul crushing. Knowing that my next sport dog will have Madeline's foundation and support is a privilege and a dream I cannot wait to live out. We're just waiting for the right litter now!
