This was Calypso’s second litter. In contrast to her first litter, I wanted to breed to a very different line of Border Collies to create versatile sport dogs with the stability and sensibility of working lines. The goal for this litter was high-drive, stable dogs with the ability to be great sport prospects while also pleasant to live with, safe, friendly and versatile. Dogs that can do things like therapy and service work, live performances in front of large crowds, herding, disc, agility, and obedience.

Their sire Glen is a Scottish sheepdog import with a lot of herding accomplishments under his belt! He's equally wonderful on ducks, sheep and cattle. His owner is a great herding trainer with a ton of experience with dogs and she says Glen is something really special. She bought him to get into USBCHA herding trials, so soon he will be adding that to his long list of accomplishments! He has a few litters on the ground and all of the puppies are doing very well in their respective homes, primarily herding and agility. From meeting Glen, I can definitely agree that he is a special dog. He's so focused on his handler and his job but once told he is off duty, he's a huge love. He wanted to climb into my lap for pets and affection! But when you're done loving up on him, he's happy to just lay down nearby and relax. He's a super impressive dog and I couldn't be happier to have been given the chance to use him as a stud for Calypso! To top it off, he is very small for a male Border Collie - just hardly bigger than Calypso is. And he's absolutely gorgeous! He's exactly what I was hoping to find to add back in more herding ability to Calypso and honor this wonderful breed in it's truest form. As a working sheepdog does!

At one year (early 2024), the Fabrics have been hugely successful in their homes and pursuits. They are all high drive, which was expected from this cross, and their temperaments are superb. They are extremely friendly, outgoing, good-natured, and environmentally sound. Collectively, they’re doing herding, agility, obedience, disc, freestyle and tricks. All of the pups are growing up to be exactly what I would hope to see in a modern Border Collie.

Velvet - 8 weeks old - 9lbs
Velvet is a total sweetheart and a little more chill than her siblings. She has fabulous structure and a lovely temperament and demeanor. She loves to lay on her back in your lap and likes to bite your ankles. She loves to play, loves to cuddle up in a dog bed, and also really enjoys training.
Picture
Lace - 8 weeks old - 7.8lbs
Lace is a little wild child with amazing focus and drive. She's little and so cute but she doesn't have all the time in the world for being held! Catch her in the right mood and she's a doll who loves to be kissed and petted, but she's a go getter with a lot of sport potential. She has food and toy drive to match. Despite her craziness, she's taking to crate training very well.

Picture
Linen - 8 weeks old - 10.8lbs
Linen is a "middle" puppy, very balanced, with a great head on his shoulders and nice structure. He's such a classic looking Border Collie, with the cutest expression! He loves people, food, toys, everything. Confident and a lot of fun. He picks things up fast and he isn't too attached, plenty of self assurance, while still loving a good snuggle. Often these midrange pups turn into some of the most lovely adults.

Picture
Denim - 8 weeks old - 10lbs
Denim is a sweet little angel. He's a lot like his sister Velvet in his sweetness and love for people. He has a submissive affection style, often flopping onto his back for the belly rubs. He has really nice focus and more often than not when I'm with the litter, I find him sitting and staring at me politely. He loves to run fast and play. He has beautiful structure. Great toy and food drive.

Picture
Cashmere - 8 weeks old - 11.2lbs
Cashmere is a bubbly, outgoing puppy with a fun personality. He loves to hop, jump, run and play! He's always glad for some cuddles and loving. He's a higher drive puppy but don't let that scare you, he's also a well balanced guy. He loves food and toys and he's a social confident pup.
Picture
Fleece - 8 weeks old - 11lbs
Fleece is what I'd classify as another midrange pup, leaning a little "crazier." He's a big boy with a lot of get up and go and you often see him rough housing and playing, or soliciting for some treats. He loves to be held but he isn't super needy. He has really pretty structure and great bone. He's a wiggly sweet guy and he loves food and toys. Often these midrange pups turn into some of the most lovely adults.
Picture
Merino - 8 weeks old - 11lbs
Merino is a very well balanced puppy, mentally and physically. He is a "middle" puppy in the sense that he isn't the most relaxed but he isn't one of the most driven either. Often these midrange pups turn into some of the most lovely adults. He enjoys affection, playing, training, and isn't too dependent on any particular thing. He also appears to have a lot of that Border Collie eye, I see him stalking toys and his siblings. He's into working for food and playing with toys.

Picture
Tweed - 8 weeks old - 8.4lbs
Tweed is another puppy with super focus for his person. Often found at my feet, manding like a little prince. He's a small male who is nicely put together and a merle with wonderful dark pigment. He is on the higher side for drive overall, food, toys, attention, etc. He's a big lover and enjoys being held and smooched on just as much as he enjoys training.
Picture
Corduroy - 8 weeks old - 11.6lbs
Corduroy is a crazy pup. He's an instigator of tussles in the litter and has been known to harass his siblings, sometimes needing intervention to save his victim. He's the biggest puppy and he uses it to his advantage! Very confident and outgoing, loves using his environment and trying new things, playing, training, and when you catch him in a calmer mood he also really loves to be cuddled and give kisses.

This is the Volhard Puppy Aptitude Test (PAT). While I find the test to be a little outdated, especially in terminology, it's still a fine tool and it doesn't hurt to do. It always just confirms my findings through raising and knowing my litter well.
  • Social Attraction - this test is right when the pup enters the area and is first met with the tester. The tester calls to them and sees what they do.
  • Following - tester walks and encourages pup to follow them, evaluates what they do.
  • Restraint - this exercise is where the tester lays the pup on it's back and holds them there to see how they react.
  • Social "Dominance" - I like to refer to it as Social Forgiveness. It's done right after the Restraint exercise and you see if they quickly "forgive" the person for making them uncomfortable and holding them down. The tester kneels and strokes the pup to see what they do.
  • Elevation "Dominance" - this is another that uses dominance in a way I wouldn't use the term but the test entails holding the pup elevated just over the ground to see how they react.
  • Retrieving - Toss a crumpled piece of paper a couple feet in front of the pup and seeing what they do.
  • Touch Sensitivity - This one isn't major and is very easily trained to be better as the dog grows up. The tester squeezes the webbing between the toes of a front paw firmly but not hard and sees how quick the pup reacts by pulling away. They do this for 10 seconds or until the reaction.
  • Sound Sensitivity - someone on the sidelines of the testing area bangs a spoon on a metal bowl to see what the pup does.
  • Sight Sensitivity - this one you have a cloth on a string of some description (we used a flirt pole which they had never seen) and jerk it around the floor. All the pups scored high on this! Which is anticipated with Border Collies.
  • Stability - for this one the tester unexpectedly opens an umbrella and sets it down, seeing how the puppy reacts.
These descriptions are all written by me in my own words so please credit me if shared/used directly. You can read more about the PAT online!

Velvet temperament test results:
  • Social Attraction - 1/2. Ran to tester eagerly then got low and sweet, climbed into her lap for love. Very social.
  • Following - 2. Followed readily, wagging and happy. Social and biddable.
  • Restraint - 5. No struggle at all, stared into testers eyes and enjoyed gentle petting. Likely docile for physical handling.
  • Social "Dominance" - 3. Quickly forgave, got into lap and tried to give kisses, wagging tail. Very forgiving.
  • Elevation "Dominance" - 4. No struggle, looked around, noticed cameraman and made sweet eyes. Very accepting of human pressures, compliant, friendly.
  • Retrieving - 3. Despite the bowl startle right before, still grabbed up the toy readily and happily, brought it to tester. See below. Cooperative nature.

  • Sound Sensitivity - 3. The bowl was on the ground and she accidentally ran into it herself, only first response counts so we used this reaction. She first gave space then went back towards it. Tester moved on to retrieving. Good recovery from the unexpected, not overly sensitive to noise.
  • Sight Sensitivity - 2/3. Stalked it at first, then pounced and curiously pawed and nibbled at it. Eager to play, visually stimulated.
  • Stability - 1/2. Startled upon opening umbrella and backed up some, then came towards it with tail up and wagging, sniffed curiously and stepped on it. Great recovery and bravery.
