This was a thoughtfully planned breeding that reflects both what I already know works exceptionally well and a goal I had been intentionally working toward for a long time. At its core, this litter is about versatility, livability, and producing dogs who are just as successful in high level sport homes as they are as active pets.
Penny herself is a medium drive, overall lower energy Border Collie with a wonderfully friendly, outgoing, and emotionally stable temperament. She is exceptionally easy to live with and truly enjoys whatever her person is doing, whether that’s busy public outings, city walks, hikes, beach days, or relaxing at home. Penny is social, confident, and unbothered by new environments, crowds, or noise, and she moves through the world with a calm, joyful steadiness that makes her a pleasure to have anywhere. While Penny is not an over the top dog, she has very high toy drive with a full, confident grip. She has dabbled in both herding and agility and showed lovely promise in each, but where she truly shines is in everyday life. Penny is a working psychiatric service dog for her owner and has lived a rich, well rounded life full of travel, socialization, and thoughtful training. She is great with people of all ages, excellent with dogs, and socially aware and fair in her interactions. Penny is the dam of both the Apples and Oranges litters, and her puppies have grown into remarkably steady, even keeled companions and versatile sport and service prospects. She is a great example of how titles don’t always tell the full story when it comes to producing exceptional puppies.
This breeding was originally planned as a dual sired pairing, using Mushu and Sprite. This approach was chosen intentionally after previous unsuccessful BorderPap attempts, allowing me to continue pursuing that goal thoughtfully without risking a missed litter for what is likely Penny’s final breeding, while prioritizing her wellbeing.
Since that time, Sprite underwent a reproductive evaluation with my repro veterinarian due to me having a hunch that he may not be able to have puppies, and was found to be completely infertile. As a result, all puppies in this litter are sired by Mushu, without the need for DNA testing.
Mushu is a high drive, athletic Border Collie with excellent coordination, natural hops, and a strong desire to work and play. He loves disc and tug, plays with intensity when appropriate, and has a remarkable ability to self moderate. He is gentle and intuitive with children and, like Penny, is a working service dog with solid public access skills, strong mental stability, and functional, athletic structure. Mushu is very sporty, cooperative, and mentally resilient, with a good off switch and a temperament that makes him a pleasure to live with. He brings a lot to the table, and I am consistently happy with how his offspring are maturing.
Mushu and Penny previously produced the Oranges litter, which has grown into one of the most well rounded litters I’ve had. Those dogs are thriving in a wide range of homes, including serious agility homes, working farms, families with young children, and active companion homes with some beginner sports. Across the board, they have shown lovely temperaments, good work ethic, and an ability to settle into real life without many of the behavioral challenges that can sometimes crop up in the breed. It is a pairing I trust deeply.
Very heartbreakingly, this litter began with six puppies, and two petite females (8 oz and 9 oz) were stillborn despite extensive attempts to resuscitate them. Losing them was incredibly difficult, especially following losses in Calypso’s litter just a day prior. Those puppies mattered deeply to me and were loved just like every puppy I produce.
From this litter, I am expecting very versatile puppies with lovely temperaments, good work ethic, and the ability to do sports while also being excellent active companions. These puppies are expected to be confident, biddable, outgoing, and genuinely enjoyable to live with, which is one of my favorite parts of Penny’s legacy as a producer.
