I am beyond excited to be welcoming Calypso’s next litter! This pairing is something I have dreamed about for a long time, and it feels incredibly special to finally see it come together. After a longer hiatus from breeding for Calypso, with her previous litter, the Fabrics, born in late 2022, it feels like she is returning to motherhood with a bang. True to form, she is already showing signs of another classically large, healthy litter, which is something she has consistently been known for. Calypso is my do it all extraordinaire and truly my soul dog. You can read extensively about her on her page, but to sum her up, she is the kind of dog people often dream of. She is bubbly, happy go lucky, outgoing, confident, and deeply biddable, with what I often call a unicorn temperament. She has never met a stranger and genuinely loves all people, carrying herself with an openness and joy that draws others in immediately. At sport trials, she impresses with her precision and skill, then steals everyone’s heart with her "woo woos" and sweetness once she’s off the field.
Calypso has done a bit of almost every sport and gives everything her all, but our primary focus together has been agility and obedience. She is also my task and public access trained service dog, as well as an invaluable helper in my dog training business. She will work happily for any handler, including children, and has an incredible ability to help young, fearful, or uncertain dogs come out of their shells. She loves babies of all kinds, including puppies, goats, and even rats, and approaches them with remarkable gentleness and intuition. Despite being very high drive with plenty of toy and food motivation, she has a natural off switch and is an absolute angel in the house. She has traveled extensively, flown, lived the van life, and taken everything in stride with confidence and ease. Calypso has consistently passed her exceptional temperament, stability, and sociability on to her puppies, making her an ideal and proven mother.
The sire, Bart, is a herding bred Border Collie with a strong work ethic and a clear headed, thoughtful approach to his job. I have loved Bart ever since he was a puppy himself, and over the years I have had the privilege of watching him grow into the dog he is today. Between spending time with him in person, watching him work sheep, taking him on pack hikes, seeing how he interacts with puppies, other intact males, dogs in general, and people, observing how he handles himself in public, and enjoying countless candid moments shared by his wonderful owner, I almost feel as connected to Bart as I do to my own dogs. Getting to know him so deeply has been an absolute pleasure, and being able to use him for one of Calypso’s litters truly feels like a dream come true.
Bart was his owner’s first working bred dog and her first dog trained for outfield herding, which makes the level of success they have achieved together all the more impressive. He is stunning to watch work, with a natural feel and presence on stock, and his bond with his person is palpable. By all accounts, he has always been an easy dog who gives his all and genuinely wants to be right, on and off livestock. He brings plenty of drive and eagerness to work without the frantic or nervy edges that can sometimes accompany very high drive or heavily working bred dogs. In the home, he has a natural off switch and is emotionally sound. Physically, he is both beautiful and functionally well structured, extremely handsome. I expect him to pair exceptionally well with Calypso, both temperamentally and physically.
This pairing is expected to be very similar in type and outcome to my Fabrics litter, which has been one of the most consistently successful litters I have produced. Those puppies are high drive, extremely friendly, and environmentally sound, and they are thriving in a wide range of homes and pursuits including agility, obedience, disc, freestyle, herding, tricks, service work, and public performance, with one of them even being the first American team to compete in Crufts International Dog Dancing. Collectively, they exemplify what I aim for in a modern Border Collie: capable, stable, adaptable dogs who love to work and are genuinely pleasant to live with.
The Circus litter is already very highly anticipated, both by my puppy buyers, including some wonderful repeat homes and some incredible new homes I am equally excited about, and by me personally. I fully intend to keep a puppy from this litter for myself, ideally a little girl who blends the best of both of her parents.
