We’re so excited to welcome our first litter of Border Whippets! Purpose bred mixes have been a long time coming for my program and I’m so thrilled the time has finally come. The Border Whippet is a lurcher (sighthound mix) created by crossing Border Collies and Whippets. They are a popular, tried and true mix that has been produced for a very long time for a variety of sports and even hunting. There are a lot of advantageous reasons to cross these two breeds, including a relatively similar size and complimentary stature, with the Border Collie adding more robustness and the Whippet bringing the built for speed design. Health wise, it’s a cross that works well, as there aren’t many predispositions to overlapping issues. And the big one, temperament and personality, with the extreme biddability and work ethic of the Border Collie which pair really nicely with the Whippet’s lovely off switch and generally easy to keep attitude.
Lapis is a lovely dog. She loves nothing quite as much as hunting but she’s very safe with small animals in the home and has a perfectly reliable recall, even calling off live courses. She is a great demo dog for our training business and knows a lot of advanced heelwork and tricks, dabbling in a lot of sports, like barn hunt, agility, rally, and fastCAT. The sport Lapis would probably do best in is dock diving, which unfortunately we have not had access to but she absolutely loves water and really turns on whenever she gets to swim, with her favorite game of all time being fetching from the water. She would happily do this all day! Otherwise, she has a little more food drive than toy drive. Around the house, she is the picture of an ideal companion with a wonderful temperament. She’s not pushy or needy, loves to snuggle up with you and relax, and is just so easy to live with. She’s fantastic with dogs, other animals, all sorts of people, and loves children. She would make an excellent therapy dog and has been trained to a very high level for public access. She’s a small girl, weighing just 26lbs.
Mushu will bring a lot of drive, biddability and work ethic to the table. His intensity mixed with her stability is going to make for some awesome dogs! Mushu is very sporty and has impressive physical skills and mental fortitude. He is always willing to try and rarely enters displacement, he’s down to give it his all no matter the circumstance, who’s around, or what’s happening. His top sport would also likely be dock diving or disc. Mushu is like Lapis in his affinity for water but he really puts his all into everything, with swimming being no exception. He’s a consistently driven dog, loves to play, loves disc and is naturally very cooperative. He also loves to tug and play competitively and will shake and thrash with all his might, but if he’s playing with a child (which he loves to do) he tones it down and is super gentle and intuitive with them. He’s a working service dog, task and public access trained, who dabbles in several sports with lots of potential for greatness.
I expect this litter to produce some great sport dogs who are also a pleasure to live with.

First Border Whippet placement! Cassian is going to Northern California to live with a very talented photographer and wonderful person, Carly. He has a big bro, a herdy mix named Echo, who has been such a welcoming dog to him already!
Cassian went home last week and has been adjusting very gracefully to his new life. He’s always been such a good stable go with the flow little guy and he is Carly’s first well bred dog, so I’m sure he’s going to impress her! He’s going to be a hiking buddy and all around companion, who may get to dip his toes into some beginner sports and see what he and Carly enjoy. We’ve known Carly for a few years now and she’s actually good friends with other OH puppy owner, Becky and Roku! I’m so glad I’ll get to continue seeing him as he grows up and being a part of his life and happy to welcome Carly to the OH family. Cassian’s new name is Bravo (Echo and Bravo! 🤩) and his registered name is Open Horizon’s The Stars Who Listen. 💫 |

Up next, it’s Azriel’s placement!
This is one I could not be more excited about. Azriel’s person told me when she applied that she wanted the craziest, highest drive male Border Whippet, whoever that may be. A bad boy, she said! And it became clear fairly early on that was going to be Azriel! He was always a very focused, driven, and determined puppy, with some very nice grit to him while maintaining his thoughtfulness. He has a great build for performance as well, so I know he’s going to bring a lot of power to the table! His human owns a dog sport facility in New York where Azriel will be mastering the dock as well as doing disc freestyle and possibly trying his hand at some other sports as well. It’s like a dream home for a sport dog! I’m so happy Nanci chose me as her breeder and I can’t wait to see all she and Azriel accomplish together. He’s another puppy who had a long journey to his new home and he handled everything with perfect ease, and since being home I’ve gotten many reports from his person that he has been adjusting ideally to his new life, getting to know his dog family, as well as learning about major snow. So proud of him! Azriel’s new name is Chip and his registered name is Open Horizon’s Most Handsome High Lord. Welcome to the OH family Nanci 🥳 you and little Az are going to make some awesome waves. |

Time for Rhysand’s placement post!
Little Rhys is another crowd favorite, with his good looks and charming demeanor. He’s been a lovely level headed puppy with drive to do all the fun things and stability to be a chill companion too! He was the most chill puppy of the litter but even then, I wouldn’t call him low drive at all. Which makes him the perfect puppy for his new owners! Rhys is living in northern California in a beautiful area with a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel brother, where he will be an active pet and companion and also be doing nose work, barn hunt, and some dock diving. He has been home for a week and a half and I’ve received rave reviews on what an amazing puppy he is, adjusting beautifully to his new life, already sleeping in the kennel overnight with no fuss, and basically bringing joy to everyone around him. His owner told me she already can’t remember life without him! 🥹 He doesn’t have an instagram of him own at this point but I’ll be sure to announce if he gets one and I’ll share his updates myself too, since I know everyone wants to see how this little guy turns out! I’m so happy for my little Rhys man and for his people. Rhysand is keeping his name! And his full name is Open Horizon’s Curse Breaker. |

Elain’s placement is next on the roster!
This little puppy has been on my radar since they started to develop personalities, and honestly even from day one with her gorgeous little face. As she grew, she only got cuter and her personality blossomed into such a little firecracker! She felt like a Border Collie puppy in so many ways, but even wilder. I loved every second! She was regularly diving headfirst into everything thrown her way. All of it with the most upbeat and friendly demeanor! She also turned onto water and could always be found with wet little paws from stomping around in the water features on the puppy patio. She loves to retrieve toys out of the water and had even been caught lying down in the water! Definitely was seeing dock in her future… So obviously I couldn’t let her go to just anyone and I really wanted to see this fireball doing sports. I was thrilled when I got the application from her new owners! Experienced and actively competing in multiple dog sports, including dock diving, fastcat, and disc. Elain is living with Cady and Keegan Jones and their awesome pack of dogs! Where she will get to try all the things, with a big focus on dock diving, which I’m stoked about for her. To top it off, she’s a co-own and may be coming back one day to have pups of her own! Elain’s new name is Zia and her full name is Open Horizon’s The Dreams That Are Answered. She’s been home just over a week now and already fitting right in and even got to go watch some dock time, which she was super excited about and wanted to get right to it! A warm welcome to the OH family and thank you to her awesome new owners for giving her a great life. |

Happy to announce Nesta’s placement!
Nesta has been a lovely, balanced, middle of the pack kind of puppy which always turn into some of the most amazing dogs. She’s got the spice and grit and drive to do anything but she also has such a sensible and strong demeanor, brave but not overly boisterous. Basically she’s just awesome! And gorgeous to boot. I can’t wait to see how her seal coloring turns out as she grows! Nesta was the stud owners favorite Border Whippet and she and I are both thrilled to announce that Nesta is staying local! My puppies go far and wide into the world, with several already representing OH internationally, and very few actually staying here in Nevada. But Nesta is staying in Sparks! Where we will get to see her very often and help guide her owner into the world of dog sports. Nesta is going to Hannah and will be her first sport dog and she’s super passionate and excited to get started and try all the things. Here in northern Nevada, we don’t have access to a ton or dog sports but we do have some and luckily I know just about everyone in the area to do dog sports with so I’m so eager to help her new owner get started! Nesta is also going on a co-ownership and Hannah is super excited to learn about more breeding stuff and how it all works! Her new name is Astraea and full name is Open Horizon’s City of Starlight which I absolutely love. She’s been home for a week and a half and doing so well. She attended family thanksgiving, stopped by her mama’s work, and had her next vet appointment, where she’s stolen the hearts of everyone she’s met! She also has a “big brother” Atlas the GSD x Malinois who she’s totally won over. Welcome to the OH family Hannah and Tristen! |

Saved Feyre for the last BW because I know some of you have been suspicious that I was going to keep her!
Where do I even begin with this little darling? She snuggled her way directly into my heart and was extremely hard not to keep. She’s a little Lapis lookalike but her attitude is so sport dog! She’s a perfect balance of precious baby girl who adores everyone and gives you the sweetest puppy eyes until you’re convinced to pick her up and cuddle her (which was often), and wildling high drive crazy girl who beats on all the other pups despite being the smallest. I spent so much time with Feyre tucked into my jacket, telling her how the heck am I going to let you go? Well, the answer was only to a very special home. Feyre is going to be a disc dog superstar and possibly dip her toes into some other sports like dock and tricks too. She’s going to live in Utah, where she will be the THIRD dog from my program! She’s living with the lovely Erynne, Rob and family with her “big brothers” Mac and Wick. It was super important for me to place Feyre with someone I know well and trust deeply to do right by her, because I think she’s a super special pup and I knew early on I wanted her to be a co-own if she wasn’t staying right here with me. So I’m so happy with this placement and thrilled for her people to have their first sport mix and first GIRL from me! And before anyone asks, yes, I am co-owning all three girls from this litter and if that doesn’t speak to how amazing this cross turned out I don’t know what would! Obviously, co-owns are a tentative hope until proven otherwise so there’s a chance only one or two or even none of them may actually become breeding dogs but it’s paramount for breeders to have good co-owners to perpetuate their program while keeping numbers reasonable. So I am eternally grateful for the amazing co-owners I have been blessed to work with! Feyre is keeping her name (thank goodness because it’s such a good one) and her full name is Open Horizon’s Stars Eternal. Happy third OH addition, Rob and Erynne! |
